What is Nail care?

Nail Care is important when it comes to personal grooming. Suppose a woman has applied makeup carefully and attired herself with most fashionable clothes, but has been careless about her nails.

  • Take care of your nails between salon visits.

  • File your nails regularly and always keep them short.

  • If your nails are exposed to chemicals, moisture, water, etc, it could result in split peeling nails or allergic reaction. Wear rubber gloves to protect your nails or coat them with some cotton.

  • Never use something like scissors for both for infected and non infected nails.

History of Nail Care

1930 Ladies of the silver screen bring polish into vogue. The overall look is one of cool sophistication and elegant, immaculate grooming. The moon manicure thrives in various tints of red. Gena Laboratories premiers its polish remover, Warm-O-Lotion, cuticle oil and cuticle remover.

1932 Charles Revson with his brother and chemist Joseph Revson, and Charles Lachman create an opaque, non-streaking nail polish based on pigments rather than dyes, making a variety of colours available. Revlon is born. In the '30s, the company invents the fashion of matching lip and nail colour.

1934 Anna Hamburg of California, is granted a patent for an artificial nail colour that can be applied and removed easily without damage to the natural nail.

Maxwell Lappe, a dentist in Chicago, creates Nu Nails, an artificial fingernail for nail biters.

Max Factor's Liquid Nail Enamel is similar to nail polishes of today. The company uses a limited number of pigments, which means its enamel is only available in red, dark red, vermillion and crimson. The fashion is to cover the entire nail with polish.

Type of nails

Just as you have skin types and hair types, you also have nail types. Generally nails are of five types. Here are some tips to know your nail type, which will also help you to decide the type of treatment required in case you suffer from nail-related problems.

  • Dry nails appear dull and lack luster. They require dehydration. In order to treat such nails apply vitamin E oil, wear a moisturizing base coat and prevent frequent change of soaps and/or hand wash.

  • Brittle nails lack moisture and flexibility and tend to break easily. If your nails do not bend when you gently press the sides, you may have brittle nails. Use of almond oil may help in the treatment of brittle nails.

  • Damaged nails flake and split, mainly due to severe dehydration. Consult your doctor for the right treatment.

  • Soft nails easily bend even at the slightest touch and rarely grow past the fingertip. Rubbing of essential oils on the nails may help in treating them. Wear hand gloves while washing and apply hand cream every time you wash hands.

  • Normal nails appear pink, shiny and grow easily. Maintain your nails by avoiding strong detergents and by regularly moisturizing them with hand cream.
